Book Review: Jesus, My Father, the CIA, and Me

Jesus, My Father, the CIA, and Me: A Memoir of Sorts
by: Ian Morgan Cron

Have you ever read a story and felt that the author was telling your life story? Well this could have been my story. If someone was ever able to put into words my feelings about family and what initially drew me to Jesus, Ian Cron has done it. Cron is a gifted storyteller who has a way of making you laugh and cry all in the same page. Though his life was wrought with heartbreak and abuse, he finds a way to honor the story of his life while pointing the reader to a Jesus who is in the business of redeeming broken things.

Cron makes talks about his life growing up with a father who was emotionally and often times physically absent from his life. His father worked on and off for the CIA, was an alcoholic and incapable of showing love to his son. Cron spent his life searching for ways to be accepted and loved by others. But the real story is about a God that pursued him through it all. Though every season of his life, every up and down, there are glimpses of a God that loves like no person could ever be capable of loving.

My favorite part of reading this story was realizing that every story deserves to be told. And when I think about all the experiences that make up my life story, it becomes so evident that the same God who relentlessly pursued Cron has done the same for me. And is continuing to call out to me in the details. Sometimes I just forget to stop and embrace it.
